What Is a Tire Alignment?
A tire alignment makes your tires track straight and true while preventing premature wear and unsafe driving conditions. It's sometimes called a wheel alignment, but in either case, your suspension is the key.
Here are the three factors of tire alignment:
1: Camber. Camber is the diagonal angle at which your tires sit. Take a head-on look at your vehicle. If the top of a tire faces toward the vehicle, that's negative camber; facing outward is positive camber.
2: Caster. Caster is your steering axis in relation to the vertical axis. It's somewhat more complicated than camber, but to understand it, look at your suspension shocks through the wheel well - positive caster is when the top is angled toward the rear of your car, and negative caster will see the steering pivot leaning toward the front.
2: Toe. Improper toe is a major culprit in the ill effects of an improper tire alignment; it is the inward or outward angle of your tires when the steering wheel is centered. It is harder to see, but toe-in is when the front of each tire points inward and vice versa.
A neutral camber, caster, and toe are not always the goal of a tire alignment. Each car needs a specific amount of negative/positive camber or caster and certain toe-in or -out angles. The expert technicians at our tire center will restore the values of each factor back to optimal specifications with precision tools and well-trained expertise.
So when should you get a tire alignment? We recommend getting an alignment check at every other oil change or at around every 10,000 miles. However, if certain dangerous symptoms appear, book a tire alignment in Baton Rouge, LA, as soon as possible to maintain safe driving and optimal tire life span:
- Your vehicle wanders to one side when the steering wheel is centered
- Your steering wheel needs to be angled to drive straight
- Your steering wheel vibrates at speed
- Your tire tread is worn down with an uneven pattern
What Are Tire Balance and Rotation Services?
Tire balancing is necessary with every rotation service, whenever a tire is brought to a new position (i.e., when installing new tires), or around every 5,000 miles. It involves small weights, and we use advanced machinery to determine where each weight should be placed in order to achieve smooth driving. If your vehicle vibrates at speed, tire balancing at our CDJR service center may be necessary regardless of mileage.
A tire rotation is necessary to maintain tread life as well. It involves "rotating" them to a new position. We change the position of each wheel in a specific pattern, as each position undergoes different tread wear factors. Proper rotation evens out those factors to maintain even tread wear and a longer life. Ideally, this tire service should be performed with every oil change.
